xplatinum on "Archive Cleanup leaving folders behind"

I noticed that the archive cleanup function will ONLY remove files from the online backup and will leave the folders containing those files there. I don't see how this is a logic appproach. If I remove a folder from my local drive, the changes should be 100% replicated in my online backup.

I shouldn't have to manually and periodically cleanup after the application by removing all the empty folders left behind.

Lenny on "Insecure permissions in Windows"

The installer for Windows, as of v6.5.1.14, sets insecure permissions that allow any user (or malware running within a user's account) to modify the program's executable files. This is considered poor security practice. If a standard user account has malware that infects one of the program's executables, and an admin user account later runs this infected executable, the malware is now able to infect the admin account, and perhaps the entire operating system.

Workaround: I manually changed the permissions back to secure permissions after IDrive installed, with no apparent ill effects so far.

Ray98 on "Email notifications not received; "error":1,"message":"No user found""

Hello,

We currently have 7 remote Linux Redhat 6 machines running iDrive via the Linux scripts supplied by iDrive (idevsutil etc). They are all set to back-up at the same time each day at 2:30am (GMT).

We are finding that we are intermittently failing to receive the expected email notifications from iDrive that the back-ups have completed from the machines. For example, this morning 3 out 7 emails were received, yesterday 1 out of 7 and Sunday 4 out of 7. There does not appear to be set day or machine this occurs from.

From checking the local iDrive logs on each of the machines they report that the back-ups were successful with 0 files failed. Upon checking the physical iDrive back-up, indeed they have backed-up ok, so it is odd why certain email notifications are not being generated.

From a machine in which the back-up email notification did not come through from today, the local tracelog.txt file reports an error of “ {"error":1,"message":"No user found"} “ regardless of the back-up having actually completed. This is also the same from the other machines in which the email notifications are not generated from.

Help greatly appreciated.

Blake on "IDrive Linux Backup_Script.pl randomly terminates without any reason"

I've got a large backup job (500GB) that I have manually started today on my fresh Xubuntu install. Everything looked to be running smoothly until I checked in on it a bit later to see that the terminal had exited to the command line. I proceeded to re-run the script only to see the same behaviour exhibited. I repeated this five times and every time I encountered the same issue. Obviously this is a problem - I need this data backed up and it's already going to take an extremely long time to do so; I can't sit and babysit the script.

Has anyone encountered this and, more importantly, does anyone know how to fix this error?

FrankA on "Immediate File Backup From File Explorer - Not Working"

Reference your online documentation on web page https://www.idrive.com/online-backup-classic-faq, which says “Can I immediately backup files and folders on my computer without launching the desktop application? Yes. Simply right-click the selected files and folders you wish to backup immediately, point to IDrive and click 'Backup Now'. IDrive performs an immediate backup for the selected files and folders.”

I tried this, but got “Unable to proceed; log in to the application and try again”. I was logged on via both the web and had the desktop application running.

I called support, the first rep said it was because the “iDrive service was not running” – I verified through both Task Manager and the Services desktop app that the iDrive service was indeed running. I also rebooted and tried with a clean logon, same result.

I called support again, and the rep said it’s not possible to back up a single file – have to either run the full backup set “Start Backup Immediately”, or upload a file through the web interface.

Both of these support answers are in conflict with your online documentation. Can you either assist me in how to get the software to work as documented, or let me know that the online documentation is incorrect and that you’re going to update it?
Thanks.

SanMan on "Local backup-Permission denied"

On multiple computers I have the Idrive client local backup failing. When it runs, hundreds of files will fail each time. Sometimes the same files will fail and other times there are new ones.
Example of error:

ERROR] [01/17/2015 18:31:52] [[/C/Users/Csmith/Favorites/Stuff/News.com News!.url][Reason: permission denied]]

All of the users are local administrators. There are no permissions issues. I have made sure there is no other backup software, disabled the AV,etc. The files are in documents, pictures, favorites, and music.

Any ideas?

Thanks

This is so slow I can't see if it will ever be finished. I've had it running for days and it is still only up to 16%? It cannot be my end unless my net service can selectively restrict your upload speed, as other services are running at normal speeds.

I have just sent an error report, too.

Hi
IDrive backs up the same 9000+ files every night even though they have not been changed.

Every night I get a report similar to below:

Files considered for backup : 25738 file(s)
Files already present in your account: 15769 file(s)
Files backed up now: 9969 file(s), Size: 22.49 GB

Any ideas?

Thanks
Vince

I'm a new user. Each of my first three uploads hung up with multiple posts of "retry." Latest one took 33 hours to upload 14 GB, while hanging 30 times with "retry." When it finally got going, it uploaded 7 GB in 50 minutes. What is "retry" and how can we escape it??

Prior to my auto-renewal, I received an email offering me double the space for $10 more. Not bad but I'm only using 11% of my space.

The email goes on to tell me: "When your account renews later this month, you will be automatically upgraded to this plan." How do you have the nerve to upgrade my plan without my permission?

I took care of this problem. But I'm hoping this heads up will be of use to others.

andreamz on "Archive Cleanup not working for Mapped drive"

$

I have IDrive 6.5.1.0 running on Windows 10 x64, all current updates installed.
I backup files from my local drives, from an external USB drive and from a Network drive (I think IDrive calls that a Mapped drive). All the backups work fine, but the Archive Cleanup does not work for the Mapped drive: if I run it from the IDrive desktop and select “consider 100% of files for cleanup” I get back the popup “There are no items to delete” even though there are multiple files that should be deleted for the Mapped drive. The other drives on the other hand seem to be cleaned correctly.
Any suggestion?
Thanks

MLB on "Archive Cleanup does NOT compare local files to the actual Archive (but it should!)"

$

Summary: Archive cleanup does not compare your local files to the iDrive Archive as one would expect. Rather, it compares your local files to what's in a LOCAL DATABASE (cache of backed up files) that gets built during the backup operations. Unfortunately, several things can cause the local database to NOT be in sync with the contents of the actual iDrive Archive, and therefore Archive Cleanup does NOT result in a 1-1 correspondence between the local filesystem and the online archive.

Requested remedy: Archive Cleanup should compare the set of local files with what's actually in the online archive, not to the local cache. I realize there is a network efficiency to comparing everything locally (and this method might be 'good enough' 90% of the time), but there should be some way to force Archive Cleanup to do a REAL, FULL compare to ensure that the archive and my filesystem are truly in sync.

Discussion: I've been plagued for months by Archive Cleanup not 'finding' files in the archive to delete that had been locally deleted. The support folks told me this was because I had upgraded my hard drive (not a very compelling answer, but that's as far as we got). Then, last week, I was in a support session because Archive Cleanup was reporting some bogus filenames for deletion (files that didn't exist locally OR in the archive). The support person said we had to rebuild the database (WHAT database I thought!) by...

1. Recording my backup set details
2. Exiting iDrive
3. Going to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\IDrive\IBCOMMON
4. Renaming or deleting the folder with my iDrive username
5. Restarting iDrive
6. Setting up my backup set details again, and
7. Doing a manual backup

Running Archive Cleanup after this, it did indeed clear out the bogus filenames. But I noticed that while Archive Cleanup was running ('scanning' my thousands of files) that there was NO network traffic. Then the light bulb went on and I started experimenting. I discovered...

1. You can start iDrive, then disable all your network connections, and then run Archive Cleanup! Yes, it 'scans' my thousands of files and reports locally deleted items - all while disconnected from the internet. How? It's comparing my local files to the local database, not to the actual archive.

2. If I do the 7-step process above, but skip step 7 (which rebuilds the local database), and then run Archive Cleanup, it INSTANTLY completes telling me everything is in sync. This only makes sense if iDrive thinks the database represents what's actually in the archive (doesn't take long to compare an empty database of files!).

How can the database and the archive get forever out of sync (and Archive Cleanup therefore forever somewhat broken)? Well, anytime the local database gets rebuilt from scratch. Examples include...
- The iDrive support people tell you to remove it (not too common, but this was the case for me)
- You upgrade the hard drive in your computer (most people then reinstall apps and copy their data files, but do NOT copy the system appdata folders during upgrades - in fact, there are good reasons not to copy the appdata folders)
- You buy a new computer and just move your data files over to it (VERY common)

Bottom line here is that there are several common, credible ways that the local database can get out of sync with the real archive, and this will keep Archive Cleanup from properly doing what it is advertised to do. So, iDrive, PLEASE provide a method for doing a true Archive Cleanup based on the actual files in the archive, and not on a local approximation.

No problem loading iDrive main page. No problem logging in. However, after logging in, I cannot see my files because the page hangs. Sometime I can see the file after 5 minutes but other times the web browser freeze and I have to close it.

Even if I manage to see my files, any action (upload, download, move files, create new foler etc) take forever and most of the time cause the browser to freeze completely.
