Just installed iDrive/Synology v2.03.22 on a DS214play, DSM v6.0.2-8451.

First login screen (logging into DSM) succeeds. But instead of allowing me to log into my iDrive account, I get this error:

[false,"Failed to create Directory \/var\/services\/web\/idriveIt\/.cache: "]

I had an older version installed before, but all I was seeing was the "n" drive, so I uninstalled the older package and now this.

Grrrrrrrr...

ADDITIONAL INFO: By the way, I did install the package under the "admin" account and I am logging in as the "admin" account.

PhoggyBuckeye on "Extremely Slow Backup"

Still trying to get that initial backup performed (for 2 weeks), and still on 30% complete (81.09GB of 270.49 GB). Ran all day and got from 29% to 30%.
Noticed that if i do Speedtest, my upload speed drops from the normal 1.00 Mbps upload speed to 0.3 Mbps. My download speed runs between 12 to 15 Mbps. I don't seem to have any other issue except the slowness of this backup process. I expected the initial backup to be slow, but 2 weeks later and less than a third of the way there? Seems like there is something wrong with this application.
Any body else suffer from such a slow process? i have the 1000 GB plan, and not sure i'll renew next time. Purchased a competitor solution for my daughter and the interface and backup seemed to be much slicker and faster.

PC Dr on "Encrypted password file for idevsutil"

I'm using idevsutil under Windows 7 to run nightly backup scripts. The backup script loads a text file containing an encrypted password via the following command:

path\idevsutil --encode --password-file=path\filename

I just had to change my password, so now I need to regenerate the file containing the encrypted version. Unfortunately, I didn't document how I did that when I first wrote the script. (I believe I followed on-line documentation, but if so, it's been removed.)

How do I generate the file containing the encrypted version of my password for use with idevsutil.exe?

TIA for your help.

I am in Western Europe (GMT+1+daylight time, so GMT+2 at the moment) but all the modification times and dates are out by several whole hours. I suspect it is showing everything in PST. Also, the date format is mm/dd/yyyy, which is US-specific and is potentially confusing for the first 12 days of every month.

When dealing with backups and versions it is very important that there be no confusion about dates and versions....

Can these two things be made configurable in the user profile? Or even better, derived automatically through the browser? Or have I missed a setting somewhere?

Ms Debra on "Multiple named backup sets in Windows?"

Is there any way to create a second, user-named backup set in the Windows client? I need to have two backup sets for two scheduled backups from a PC: one for the PC's data, and one for a Synology DS411j.

The Synology already has a backup set which was seeded via IDrive Express run on the PC. I cannot, however, use the Synology client to maintain that backup set because the Default Location dialog box will not save a new backup location (ticket #ID00552601). I need to maintain that backup set from the PC until a fix is found for the Synology client.

Dear sir, madam,

I see many people in the forum experiencing the same thing: very very slow uploads. In my case not even 1% of the speed of my connection.
You are not addressing this problem correctly, the only thing I see you do is asking people to get in touch via the Send Error Report.

Wouldn't it be time to come out with a statement and explain what is going on? Or are you scamming us?

I have just started, it doesn't feel right in any way, due to your lack of appropriate online response. Since you are not performing as one might expect, I want to cancel my subscription and would like my money back.

I simply do not trust you with my data. And trust is key here.

How do I cancel?

looking for a fix: after iDrive completes, it pops up a window on the desktop that reports success. Problem, this keeps the PC windows open and active not allowing the PC to sleep or lock. this is a security issue for any pc and a P.I.T.A. for laptop users who wake up to a dead or nearly dead battery. is there a way to turn off this pop up report or to have it time out?

Currently, in the Scheduler, there is an option to enable email notifications, from there you can "Notify always" or "Notify on Failure".

I would love to see the option to to "Notify on Changed Files". My backups are relatively static, a few configuration files may be updated, but the majority of the photos, videos, and documents that I back up do not change. If these do change for some reason (removed from the backup, encrypted with ransomware, etc). I would love to have a notification that they have been changed.

Ideally, this email would be in a diff format. In other words, it would show that 20 of 8723 files have changed. The following 10 files were changed (list), the following 7 files were added (list), the following 3 files were removed (list).

This may not be a useful feature for those that have a large amount of files that change daily, but I feel like the majority of your customers would benefit from an update to their current backup status.

Berzelius on "2 questions on Local Backup"

1) Incremental backups. During a search on this forum I noticed a couple of posts complaining about lack of incremental backup for Local Backup. I've just looked at my local backup files using Windows Explorer and the dates and sizes do suggest that incremental backup is occurring. So, does Local Backup indeed use incremental backup?

2) Archive Cleanup. I use Local backup to backup the My Documents folder. Obviously there is going to be a great number of new and deleted files. To prevent the backup from growing rapidly is there any way of doing an Archive Cleanup on the local backup, similar to what you can do with the Internet backup? i realise that this would mean a loss of the ability to recover deleted files.

Distorted Vision on "Initial Impressions of IDrive: Very Slow Backup and Restore."

I have just signed up for a free account with a view of upgrading to the paid service. I am currently a LiveDrive user and have been for the past few years. It works fine but the main attraction of IDrive was that I could backup from multiple machines something which would have worked out expensive with LiveDrive. I was looking for direct replacement cloud backup service with continuous instantaneous data protection that was unobtrusive that worked in the background unnoticed.

I had high expectations for IDrive but sadly I've been left very disappointed. The software interface looks clean but I sometimes I find the actions not as expected. For example the Archive Cleanup didn't work and I had to delete the files from the server myself.

My main disappointment is the backup and restore speeds. I have a 200Mbit/s download and 20Mbit/s upload fibre optic connection from Virgin Media in the UK. However, I am only getting maximum backup speed of 400kbit/s and restore speed of 350kbit/s. Whats strange is that the restore speed is slower than the backup speed. With LiveDrive I am able to get maximum speeds for my connection. I appreciate their Datacenter is in London and IDrive is in the US but I get much better speeds with other US based cloud services.

I have tested it on all my machines which have a mixture of operating systems: Windows 7 64bit, Windows 10 and Windows Server 2008 R2. I even did a clean build of Windows 7 with just IDrive and nothing else and it was exactly the same.

How do I see previous versions of a file available to restore? In LiveDrive you just right click and it shows all the timestamps of versions available.

Some other features of lack of which I dislike with IDrive is:

1. Only 10 previous versions. LiveDrive has 20. Other services are usually around this figure too.
2. Large files have restricted backup if I understand correctly. My Outlook.pst file is the most important file I need to backup and its currently 5Gb. This seems to be a major drawback unless I'm missing something.

I was wondering if anyone can make any suggestions before I decide whether to subscribe to the service or not.

Many thanks!

Distorted Vision on "Private Key Encryption: Filenames"

$

I was just wondering if filenames are encrypted on IDrive's servers when using private key encryption. The Terms & Conditions state:

"Encryption System
IDrive supports 256-bit AES data encryption before transmission from your computer using either (i) a default key or (ii) an optional user defined private key created by you. Based on your privacy and security needs, you need to make an appropriate encryption key choice. This encryption process encrypts the data contained within the file and not the file-name itself. For web and mobile based data transfers, data is sent over an encrypted channel with server side AES 256-bit encryption.

If you choose the default encryption option, the system chooses a key for encrypting your data. While your data is still encrypted, IDrive personnel may still be able to decrypt your data using your Registration Information if such a situation should ever arise.

For private key accounts:
Should you choose to use a user defined private key for encrypting your data, IDrive personnel will not have access to this key and it will not be stored on the IDrive servers. It is very important that you store your user defined private key in a safe place and maintain this key in printed form for reference. Any data backed up using the Services can only be retrieved using your key and if you forget or misplace this key then your data may not be retrievable. IDrive is NOT responsible for loss of data arising as a result of such cases.

When logging into your account via the desktop client, you will need to enter your private key, but it is only stored on the client and is never sent to the IDrive servers. In order to verify that the information you enter is correct, a derivative of that key is generated and matched, allowing you to access your account. When you provide your private key while logging into your account using the web application, the key is sent to our servers for the duration of that session only and the key always remains fully encrypted throughout transmission."

But I can't tell if its referring to private key encryption as well.

Every time I try to do a full backup, it freezes at 63%, and the listing of what files are currently being backed up toggles between the same two files. Anyone know how to solve this?

KaseyL on "Restore Speed"

I'm trying to restore 528GB of backup up data after an external drive failure. I run Time Warner Cable, and pay for their fastest internet connection. Speed Test will tell me that my download speed is >200 MBPS. When running restore, the restore process shows that I'm only restoring at 3-4MBPS. The download test in the Idrive app shows a download speed of 1000 KBPS.

Why is the restore process not restoring at the speed of my internet connection. At this rate, I'll never be able to restore my hard drive.

I have a Synology DS1515+ NAS with an encrypted folder. I have it configured to require to manually mount the folder with the key after a power down, to ensure if the NAS is stolen that the data is protected.

If IDrive backup automatically runs without requiring a login after a power down, would my encrypted IDrive backup be available on the NAS? Seems like the credentials and encryption key must be stored somewhere on the NAS.

JMon on "Synology - iDrive combination killing internet access during backup"

Whenever iDrive is doing a backup, access to the internet goes bad.
Bad= can't even hit a simple site like google, or bandwidth is VERY bad to the point it is unusable. Pings time out etc..

I would think my Nighthawk router would throttle in a way that other devices get fair time. But something seems very odd here. When I run an iDrive backup from a PC, everything still seems good enough for other devices when accessing the internet.

It is just the combination of the iDrive + Synology that seems to introduce the problem.
Also when this happens, I can't access the iDrive UI page running on the NAS.
I've rebooted every combination of devices and still goes back to when iDrive starts a backup, internet access begins to go bad.

I've also tried adjusting the iDrive throttle and that doesn't seem to help either.

Where do I even begin trouble shooting this problem?

I have noticed that there sometimes seems to be a limit of 10000 files restored when doing a restore using Windows client v6.5.1.14. This seems to be undocumented. A workaround is to press the "Restore Now" button again after a restore has finished, which causes IDrive to continue where it left off.
