JMon on "Synology - iDrive combination killing internet access during backup"

Whenever iDrive is doing a backup, access to the internet goes bad.
Bad= can't even hit a simple site like google, or bandwidth is VERY bad to the point it is unusable. Pings time out etc..

I would think my Nighthawk router would throttle in a way that other devices get fair time. But something seems very odd here. When I run an iDrive backup from a PC, everything still seems good enough for other devices when accessing the internet.

It is just the combination of the iDrive + Synology that seems to introduce the problem.
Also when this happens, I can't access the iDrive UI page running on the NAS.
I've rebooted every combination of devices and still goes back to when iDrive starts a backup, internet access begins to go bad.

I've also tried adjusting the iDrive throttle and that doesn't seem to help either.

Where do I even begin trouble shooting this problem?

I'm looking for other solutions. IDrive is so slow I can't get a backup of my Mac (237GB) in a week's time. Plus it makes the fans on my machine run very frequently. It's been running for almost 11 hours (since 11:30 last night) and is still at 0%. I've given up before because I can't go a week or more with this thing running and slowing my computer down/heating it up. Any suggestions? All my apps are closed, my internet service tests at 8.30 mbps for upload, 99.73 mbps download. Running Yosemite v10.10.5. I have no problems with any other apps, downloads, etc., running slow. Any suggestions?

My iDrive is about to auto renew, so I was asked to reset my password when I went in to update my password. iDrive didn't backup today because my password didn't match. Do I need to change it somewhere else?

I signed up for iDrive 2 weeks ago today. At that time I requested a hard drive be sent. It arrived quickly, just 2 days later. I backed up my files and shipped the unit back on the first business day. They received the unit a week ago today. On Monday I received a notice that my files "should" be available by Tuesday. As of today, nothing! So, after a full 14 days I still don't have access to my backup. I've written and chatted with customer service 3 times and just get the same canned response, "...please continue to wait for an email that will be sent as soon as the upload is complete". After reading so many glowing reviews, I'm surprised and very disappointed. Has anyone else experienced similar poor customer service? Is this indicative of iDrive's service? What can I expect if I have a catastrophic hard drive failure and need to access all my files? Extremely uncomfortable with my decision to buy iDrive at this point.

A friend talked me into buying an IDrive subscription for backup. I just accepted the defaults and let the IDrive program do its thing. Suddenly this week my PC died - crashed and unrecoverable hard drive. Bought a new PC (from Staples), and after setting it up I followed the IDrive restore instructions. It took a long time to download the restore files (24 hours), but my backup was close to 100 Gb.

Almost like magic, my new PC has all the files my old PC had. My giant ITunes library is just like it was. All my documents are available. I am a happy camper!

Hi,
My connection is a 50 mbit download and 10 mbit upload on optic fibre.
My PC is connected to the router through ethernet cable, no one else is using my bandwidth, firewall is off, and with other cloud services I can download and upload at full capacity. Even speedtest net shows 50+10 by testing my connection with any Californian host based.

Here is the problem: When I backup (upload) through IDrive software the maximum speed I get is only 3 mbit, and another 3 mbit on restore (download). The maximum speeds I get by backing up on restoring through IDrive web interface are respectively: 10 mbit upload and 12 mbit download. As I said my connection works great with other cloud service, by using the speed up to its maximum (50 down + 10 up). I guess there must be a problem with the IDrive software, as although not being great through web interface as well, it is 4 times faster than operating through the software.
Anyone else experiencing the same issue?
Thanks

Hi, Does anyone know if it's possible to install the iDrive client on the above NAS? If so, any particular version (seems that apps are available for various versions but not the 216), and any particular steps to follow?

Help would be very much appreciated :-)

Thanks

Paul

How long does it take iDrive to restore the iDrive Express backup? Mine was received on August 12th by iDrive according to the confirmation e-mail, but today, August 22nd, my backup still has not been restored to my account.

I sent an e-mail on August 17th asking about the status, and received an automated response, but nothing else. I called and waited on tech support line until I was kicked out of the queue and forced to leave a message.

This is my new iDrive account. I've been a customer for years on the old version, but never had to contact tech support. Not impressed so far.

I have just upgraded to DSM 6.0.2-8451 on a DS413j and I am running iDrive 2.03.21

Now I have no Diskstation file structure showing in iDrive - just a file structure "n" which is empty, so I can't create a backup set.

I have Webstation 1.0.56-0056 running.

Am I missing something please?

Been running this version for weeks with no problem. Had a daily schedule setup. It's been running fine. This morning I tried to open the settings screen to add a folder to the backup. As soon as I logged in got spinner.

Stopped and restarted the IDrive app. Still spinning indicator.

Removed the app and reinstalled it. Still only get the spinning indicator.

I am not able to access any of the settings now.

What is the secret to get this working again?

I've been backing up with idrive for a year or more and it works smoothly. Recently it asked me to change my password which I did. However I forgot to change it on the desktop app so the next day's backup failed. I went in and changed it on the app and started a backup. The backup update usually takes about an hour to catch everything up. But this one today has run all night and is going to hit 12 hours. Any reason it would start a new backup from scratch because of the failure? It's tying up my resources and I can't work.

Ray98 on "Email notifications not received; "error":1,"message":"No user found""

Hello,

We currently have 7 remote Linux Redhat 6 machines running iDrive via the Linux scripts supplied by iDrive (idevsutil etc). They are all set to back-up at the same time each day at 2:30am (GMT).

We are finding that we are intermittently failing to receive the expected email notifications from iDrive that the back-ups have completed from the machines. For example, this morning 3 out 7 emails were received, yesterday 1 out of 7 and Sunday 4 out of 7. There does not appear to be set day or machine this occurs from.

From checking the local iDrive logs on each of the machines they report that the back-ups were successful with 0 files failed. Upon checking the physical iDrive back-up, indeed they have backed-up ok, so it is odd why certain email notifications are not being generated.

From a machine in which the back-up email notification did not come through from today, the local tracelog.txt file reports an error of “ {"error":1,"message":"No user found"} “ regardless of the back-up having actually completed. This is also the same from the other machines in which the email notifications are not generated from.

Help greatly appreciated.

After waiting 6 working days to finally get a notification that my hard drive files were finally ready, I started an backup covering the days since I returned the drive. Shockingly, the software is now estimating an incremental backup time of over 9 hours for just 14GB of extra data. In addition, the "backup progress" area occasionally shows flashes of a "Full Backup"! What is happening? I certainly can't tie up my PC for 9 hours every day doing a backup of a few GB of data.

Between a totally nonexistent customer service response and now this bizarre time consuming backup, I am very disenchanted with iDrive.

Please, can someone give me some guidance???

Gary Alderson on "IDrive for Linux - I have added Regular Expressions and Fixed many things --- Interested ???"

About a month ago I started working with the IDrive for Linux product. A feature that I have long wanted to see in IDrive is the ability to use Regular Expressions for exclusion criteria. Most other backup products have this and it is sadly lacking in IDrive. As well, I received many error messages when I CRONed the backup task.

So ... I took the Backup_Script.pl Version 1.3 and did a fair amount of work on it. I would happily like to share this and of course upload it back to IDrive to help the development process of the product. No catches, just trying to be a good client and give back. Credit would be nice ;-)

Anyways, I am not sure how IDrive handles this type of thing, so please contact me if you are interested in my modifications. A summary of fixes and enhancements are as follows:

# $Id: Backup_Script.pl,v 1.5 2014/10/18 21:28:41 alders Exp $

# $Revision: 1.5 $

# $Log: Backup_Script.pl,v $
# Revision 1.5 2014/10/18 21:28:41 alders
# Minor reformatting of comments to keep things clean.
# Clean source is good source.
#
# Revision 1.4 2014/10/18 21:24:26 alders
# Rewrote subOutputThread and subOutputRoutine to fix a major bug in progress
# reporting. When they attempted to read the TEMPOUTFILE ./output.txt, there
# was no error checking whether the open suceeded or not. In case where the
# open failed, attempts to read the file continued causing error messages on
# STDERR, thus causing CRON to complain. As well the logic was very inefficient
# for parsing and selection. The danger to processing of course was that the
# @fields array was often corrupt with garbage and undefined values.
# It is all working good now. Also related to revision 1.3.
#
# Revision 1.3 2014/10/11 21:16:26 alders
# Put in a fix for convertFileSize. At random, chunks of memory were being
# passed as a parameter instead of a proper numeric filesize. This nullifies
# any bad stuff being passed. I suspect it something to do with threading.
#
# Revision 1.2 2014/10/11 07:40:48 alders
# 1. Exclusion criteria using Regular Expressions
# 2. More information to reports to show parameters
# 3. Perform more extensive parameter error checking
# 4. Include DOT files in backup (easily excluded via regular expression ^.*/\.)
# 5. Report on effectiveness of exclusion criteria
# 6. Eliminate Prototype warnings by using proper function
# call syntax IE. &function( parms );
# 7. Made program both strict and warnings compliant.
# 8. Used PerlTidy -ce -l=80 -i=4 -lp -ctl=1

I'm trying to set up using a Wi-Fi connection, but I have my SSID name broadcast turned off. I contacted tech support and was told that there was no way to enter the name and password manually, and not only would I have to turn name broadcast on, but that I would have to leave it on. Is there a way around this or will I have to use a patch cable and a port on my router?

After the latest DSM update (6.0.2-8451), all my backups have failed. That is because my shared folders are not shown anymore in the file/folder list of the IDrive app. Instead, there are strangely named folders g,h,he,n,ostot,t,ures, they all are empty and have the modification date 1970/1/1 2:00 AM. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the IDrive app, it did not help. Any idea what is wrong?
