MLB on "Archive Cleanup does NOT compare local files to the actual Archive (but it should!)"

Summary: Archive cleanup does not compare your local files to the iDrive Archive as one would expect. Rather, it compares your local files to what's in a LOCAL DATABASE (cache of backed up files) that gets built during the backup operations. Unfortunately, several things can cause the local database to NOT be in sync with the contents of the actual iDrive Archive, and therefore Archive Cleanup does NOT result in a 1-1 correspondence between the local filesystem and the online archive.

Requested remedy: Archive Cleanup should compare the set of local files with what's actually in the online archive, not to the local cache. I realize there is a network efficiency to comparing everything locally (and this method might be 'good enough' 90% of the time), but there should be some way to force Archive Cleanup to do a REAL, FULL compare to ensure that the archive and my filesystem are truly in sync.

Discussion: I've been plagued for months by Archive Cleanup not 'finding' files in the archive to delete that had been locally deleted. The support folks told me this was because I had upgraded my hard drive (not a very compelling answer, but that's as far as we got). Then, last week, I was in a support session because Archive Cleanup was reporting some bogus filenames for deletion (files that didn't exist locally OR in the archive). The support person said we had to rebuild the database (WHAT database I thought!) by...

1. Recording my backup set details
2. Exiting iDrive
3. Going to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\IDrive\IBCOMMON
4. Renaming or deleting the folder with my iDrive username
5. Restarting iDrive
6. Setting up my backup set details again, and
7. Doing a manual backup

Running Archive Cleanup after this, it did indeed clear out the bogus filenames. But I noticed that while Archive Cleanup was running ('scanning' my thousands of files) that there was NO network traffic. Then the light bulb went on and I started experimenting. I discovered...

1. You can start iDrive, then disable all your network connections, and then run Archive Cleanup! Yes, it 'scans' my thousands of files and reports locally deleted items - all while disconnected from the internet. How? It's comparing my local files to the local database, not to the actual archive.

2. If I do the 7-step process above, but skip step 7 (which rebuilds the local database), and then run Archive Cleanup, it INSTANTLY completes telling me everything is in sync. This only makes sense if iDrive thinks the database represents what's actually in the archive (doesn't take long to compare an empty database of files!).

How can the database and the archive get forever out of sync (and Archive Cleanup therefore forever somewhat broken)? Well, anytime the local database gets rebuilt from scratch. Examples include...
- The iDrive support people tell you to remove it (not too common, but this was the case for me)
- You upgrade the hard drive in your computer (most people then reinstall apps and copy their data files, but do NOT copy the system appdata folders during upgrades - in fact, there are good reasons not to copy the appdata folders)
- You buy a new computer and just move your data files over to it (VERY common)

Bottom line here is that there are several common, credible ways that the local database can get out of sync with the real archive, and this will keep Archive Cleanup from properly doing what it is advertised to do. So, iDrive, PLEASE provide a method for doing a true Archive Cleanup based on the actual files in the archive, and not on a local approximation.

Berzelius on "Unencrypted local backup"

Now that I have updated my iDrive I notice what looks like an extremely useful local backup facility. However, what I do not want is an encrypted local backup. I'd like it unencrypted for two reasons.

1) I'm the only user of my PC and I backup to my external HD or a USB stick. There would be no particular advantage in having encrypted information on a device sitting next door to the PC containing the same information unencrypted.

2) More seriously, if my PC suffered a major breakdown (and I've had enough to know that the risk is not insignificant) then I'd be locked out of my information until I replaced the damaged system or found someone willing to put iDrive on their PC. Plus there's always Murphy's law and I end up finding problems in decrypting the information on a new PC.

If I move a file from one folder to another, iDrive will recognize the moved file as a new file because it is in a different directory. Is there a way to delete the old file automatically?

backup is scheduled on my Samsung S4 mini mobile each night at 4:16 am.
And every morning, I find a notification saying "scheduled backup cancelled - no network connectivity".
And yet, my mobile phone is on and under wifi connectivity all night.
What is the problem?

I am trying to backup photos from a digital camera, these are created in both ARW (Sony RAW format) and JPG versions.

I do not need to backup both types so want to exclude the JPGs, the file names are formatted as DSCxxxxx.JPG where xxxxx is a numeric sequence.
I have tried to use DSC*.JPG and DSC?????.JPG as filters but neither works, the images are still backed up.

The only option that works is to add *.JPG to the exclude list, but this also blocks all other JPGs from other sources!!

Has anybody had a similar experience or suggestion on how to resolve this problem?

After idrive wakes my computer to backup, it doesn't let it sleep again. Here's the results of powercfg -requests:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>powercfg -requests
DISPLAY:
None.

SYSTEM:
[DRIVER] \FileSystem\srvnet
An active remote client has recently sent requests to this machine.
[SERVICE] \Device\HarddiskVolume2\Program Files (x86)\IDrive\id_service.exe (IDr
iveService)

AWAYMODE:
None.

EXECUTION:
None.

PERFBOOST:
None.

This is a problem since my backups run in the middle of the night.

I've created overrides to prevent the other things from preventing sleep:

C:\WINDOWS\system32>powercfg -requestsoverride
[SERVICE]

[PROCESS]
wmpnetwk.exe SYSTEM
wmpnetk.exe SYSTEM

[DRIVER]
srvnet SYSTEM
ASUS Xonar DGX Audio Device SYSTEM
Microsoft LifeCam VX-2000. SYSTEM

C:\WINDOWS\system32>

Why is it that the bandwidth test tells me download speed of 7mb/s and upload speed of 1.16mb/s yet when it is backing up my speeds are ranging from about 40kb/s - 80kb/s.
This backup is terribly slow, can anything else be done to speed it up, I am not using any other device on the internet while I am backing up.

Marc C on "iDrive operations taking painfully long time"

About a month ago I started experiencing significant slowdowns with basic "sync" iDrive file operations, whether being performed on my Android or through my browser (Chrome on Linux).

It's begun taking almost a minute just to navigate from one folder to another, and creating a new folder is taking 2-5 minutes.

Downloading a whole folder or selected files within one is now taking tens of minutes to prepare the zip file (the folder contains pics and vids, so zips end up being 50-300 Meg in size). The actual download does then proceeds in a timely manner.

Is it me? Is it iDrive server overload?

Using Version 2.03.10 as reference (which works fine after some installation hassle), I would like to suggest following feature: Be able to retrieve previous versions of a file.

This is possible in the Windows version, but not in the Synology app:
https://www.idrive.com/online-backup-classic-faq#sync10:
"The Sync folder maintains up to 10 previous versions of all the files.

Steps to restore previous versions of a file ....."

Currently, wherever setup schedule backup in Android, you cannot pick to backup selected files, which most of the files within the backup set is useless to me.

Looking for the following enhancements:
- schedule backup for selected files
- multi backup set

It would be nice to be able to have multiple schedules one for weekdays and one for weekends. It appears that the UI should support this, but I can only edit the one job; which requires me to change it during different times of the week.

Hi,

i'm missing the option to do a archive cleanup from the Synology package. I have moved some files and realized that these was backed up twice. Would somehow need to remove old files which is no longer availible on the NAS.

PhilF on "CDP for Synology NAS??"

The most frequent backup schedule for the Synology app is currently one hourly, - there is no CDP functionality. I also use the NAS with the Surveillance Station (using Beta v7) and the ability to have almost instant backup of the snapshot motion recordings would be a great addition to iDrive in order to safeguard against the physical theft of the NAS.

Even if real CDP is, (for some reason - memory??) not feasible, a two or five minute backup interval would be a great improvement.

Any chance please??

Can we get a progress update on the Synology IDrive app? The Windows client tells me the % complete, # of files and the upload speed. Can we get the same info on the Synology client? Using the log files just isn't a good solution. Thanks.

I have just noticed that iDrive has added itself to the right click context menu of the Win 7 Start button. I strongly dislike programs that sneak things in like this without asking the user, so, how do I get rid of it? It does nothing that can't be done elsewhere.

Berkleigh on "Optional Folder Level Security"

Would like to see the addition of another layer of security, passwords required to access and download files from the Web interface. My hope is should someone hack or otherwise gain access to our main account's password they won't be able to get much further than that without the passwords for the individual folders. Perhaps selective 2 factor authentication on folders or the ability to download. For example, I click on a file to download and I'm presented with a prompt for additional credentials to prove I'm authorized to have access to those files or perhaps just at the folder level. Would also need attempts to access files, successful or not, logged somewhere for auditing purposes.

Come on guys, fix the Synology app so it installs and works without us having to go in and mess around with config files using PUTTY and the command line. Synology has it's own App called CloudSync that works with many popular cloud storage providers including M$ OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive). Perhaps you could work with Synology, dump your app and get them to include you in theirs? You were looking like THE cloud storage provider for backup but now the Synology/CloudSync/OneDrive combo is looking better and better.

From what I have seen the encryption method is set on the 'Master' account and all sub-accounts attached to it must follow that encryption method and use the same key. This is very bad for re-sellers as we must use the same encryption key at every client location. I also did not see a way to change the encryption key should there be a incident where the password has been compromised. Having to delete the data of every client to recreate it with new encryption keys would be a nightmare.
